TRACY AND DAVID HAWAII BOUND AGAIN!

Family and Friends,

Tracy and David are both going back to race at Ironman Hawaii after AMAZING races at Ironman New Zealand. On Saturday March 1st approximately 1,100 Ironman Athletes participated in the 24th running of Ironman New Zealand.
David: 9 hrs 23 min 49 sec. David was 30th overall behind 18 pro men, 3 pro women, and 8 amateur men. David was the 27th man across the line out of 868 men and the 9th amateur man out of 835 amateur men. David was 2nd in his age group out of 164. David's age group had 9 spots for Hawaii.

Tracy: 10 hrs 56min 56 sec. Tracy was 303rd overall behind 22 pro men, 13 pro women, 256 amateur men, and 12 amateur women. Tracy was the 26th woman across the line out of 246 and the 13th amateur woman out of 232 amateur women. Tracy was 2nd in her age group out of 45. Tracy's age group had 5 spots for Hawaii.

So David and Tracy both stood on the podium at awards yesterday as only the top 3 in each age group get awards. This was the first time David or Tracy got an Ironman award.

Can you believe our results were almost identical??? The race conditions were tough but times were still good. The swim was in lake Taupo and the water was a perfect 65 degrees, perfectly flat and calm, and times were fast. After the swim we had to run about 500meters to the first transition area so this is why the first transition times were so long. The rolling hill bike course had two loops and conditions were ideal on the first loop, but by the second loop the wind was blowing 15-20mph and it was raining. The run course was also two loops with rolling hills and it continued to rain and the wind was really blowing during the run.

David's Race: David's swim time of 54:43 was a personal best and he was in 81st place after the swim (15th in his age group). David's first transition was a little slow because he took extra time to dry his feet and put on socks (foot management is critical at Ironman). David moved through the field on the bike with a personal best time of 5:03:00. Breaking 5 hours would have been magical but with the wind it just was not meant to be. By the time David finished his bike he had moved up to around 30th place overall and 4th in his age group. During the 2nd loop of the bike from mile 90 to 105 the woman's race leader Jo Lawn was actually riding very close behind David and at one point she even receive a warning from a race official for riding to close (drafting) behind David. David had a quick second transition and a consistent run. His marathon time of 3:19:21 was also a personal best at Ironman. He was really hoping to be able to run under 3:10 but he did not have the spring in his step. Nevertheless he ran his way up to 2nd in his age group. The winner in his age group raced pro the last few years but switched back to age group this year after running out of money and getting a different job.

Tracy's Race: Tracy's race began congestion free in the swim as she laid low and off to the side for a very relaxed swim start. However, this may not have been a very smart move in hindsight as congestion seemed inevitable as she moved along the course. She was super pleased with a 1hr 8min swim and appreciated the calm, tranquil waters and the beautiful temperature. Back on land and out onto the bike course, she took it nice and easy for the first 45k (as per the plan), and thankfully this part was going into a nice headwind. Once she made the turn, the wind pushed you practically all the way home, except up the hills, so she was able to ride about 25 miles per hour. It felt amazing after the slow go out to the turnaround. Turtle pace out and hare pace back. In 2004, she had a horribly slow bike split – just felt flat the entire time to achieve a personal worst. After the first loop that year, she felt dead and couldn't fathom going around for a second time. This year was a completely different story, even with the crazy wind and the rainy day. She felt incredible after the first loop. She felt very blessed to have such strength of spirit and power in her legs the entire day. Hallelujah! It was a truly miraculous day! What can she say about the run? It was her dream run performance…to always run a Boston qualifying time in an IM marathon. She thought she had a sub-3:40 locked in but found out after she finished that she left transition earlier than she realized (by 2.5 minutes). Bummer, huh? Oh well, because I am over 35 now, I actually have until 3:45 to qualify SO I still did it! Ha!!! Tracy started the run 10th in her age group but with a huge PR in the marathon (3:41:18) she moved all the way up to 2nd in her group and finished only 2min and 31 sec behind the winner of her age group. I never had so many people comment on my speed in an IM marathon before – they loved my outfit, my hat, my smile, my pace…and I loved their support and yours too. Thank you so much for caring to follow us online. Sending love to you all and a super big hug from New Zealand.

It is also worth mentioning that a friend of ours from Chile who trains in our club (Alvaro Chacon) also qualified for Hawaii (he was 4th in David's age group). Another friend of ours from Chile already qualified for Hawaii 2008 at Ironman Florida in Nov 2007. So to date we have 4 people from our club qualified for Hawaii and hopefully a few more will qualify at Ironman Brazil. So this year in Hawaii we are hoping our coach from Chile will also come. David will represent the USA this year and his friends can carry their Chilean flag this year!

Aloha and hopefully we will see you at Kona or Clearwater as we now have 2 World Championship races one in October and another in November!
